“George Robert Cox and Patricia Joder Cox were childhood friends who, during high school at Cheyenne High, had a moment when they realized that their dreams should be fulfilled together. After college, they married and moved to California for George’s military training. They returned to fulfill his service at F.E. Warren Air Force Base. They had two children. Patricia taught school at Churchill Elementary. George co-owned Western Skies Motel on Lincolnway. In 1960, at the age of 28, George was elected to the Wyoming House of Representatives and served until his death. At age 35, he was elected Mayor of Cheyenne. George chaired the committee to establish Laramie County Community College and ushered its authorization through the State Legislature. He led the development of the Cheyenne Civic Center complex, centered on this corner of Pioneer Avenue and 20th Street. George served Cheyenne until his untimely death in 1969 at age 37 during his first term as Mayor. Patricia lived a full life as a dedicated educator and a beloved mother and grandmother, dying in 2021 at the age of 88. They are at rest together in Cheyenne.”
