A Little History

Through a 2019 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the City of Cheyenne, Arts Cheyenne manages the Art in Public Places program. This includes an annual allocation to help oversee the broad maintenance, procurement, marketing, and management of our over xx public works of art.

This agreement is on the heels of several decades of community and ad-hoc committee public art installations and programming, many of which Arts Cheyenne has supported in some fashion. Our Cheyenne community is rich in its ability to implement and enjoy public art, and we would not be where we are today without that spirit.

Cheyenne Big Boot Program

“These Boots are made for Talking” started as a joint project of the Cheyenne Depot Museum Foundation and the Downtown Development Authority. The boots were sponsored by local businesses and auctioned at a fundraiser. The nearly $100,000 raised went to the Cheyenne Depot Museum Endowment Fund to benefit the museum.

Boots are added to the collection each year as local businesses and individuals commission boots for themselves. The proceeds go to maintaining the historic
depot.

Many of the painted boots showcase the history of Cheyenne and Wyoming, and you can go on a scavenger hunt to find them all!

Water Tank Mural Project

The Water Tank Mural project is a multi-entity partnership project to place two murals by local artist Jordan Dean on the water tanks visible in North Cheyenne.

Arts Cheyenne’s role in this project is simply to support another public art piece taking place in our community. This project has a separate funding and planning committee organized through a Discover Cheyenne fiscal sponsorship.

Public Piano Program

From 2015-2023, Arts Cheyenne facilitated a Public Piano Program, where gently used working pianos were painting by local artists and positioned in public spaces around the community. Partner organizations helped to keep them covered and protected in the elements, and to store them in the off season.

The program was a fun success, with many entities lovingly caring for their pianos. As with any delicate wood item out in the elements, eventually our weather claimed many, and with changes in capacity among partners, the pianos project is on a hiatus.

Kinetic Art Program

Following receipt of a 2021 ARPA grant, Arts Cheyenne received both operational support funds, and funding to implement at 2 year Kinetic Art-on-loan program.

Through two separate calls for artists processes, 6 kinetic pieces were placed in the downtown and surrounding area between 2022-2024.

This was a fun program that demonstrated strong, continued partnership between Arts Cheyenne and the City Community Recreation and Events department (without whom this project would not have been successful)!

While some pieces were not up to snuff in our strong Wyoming winds, Arts Cheyenne was glad to host all artworks, and this program has built a framework for future sculpture-on-loan programs to take place.
